Default Fly tying instructional books

Hi -

I would appreciate recommendations for what you folks consider the
best fly tying book(s) for a beginner. I have looked at many in book
stores as well as online, and most seem advanced. I am looking for a
book that has the typical photos as well as recipes, and step-by-step
instructions; for the beginner.

Regards and thanks,

Dick Williams

There are so many in the meantime, that it is difficult to say. Not many of
them are really good either. If you are unable to obtain personal
instruction, then you would be better advised to follow one of the courses
on the net.

This one is reasonable; http://www.flyanglersonline.com/

Look at fly-tying for beginners.

Try renting or buying the VHS tapes. You can pause them and rewind them.

Default Fly tying instructional books

I love books on fishing.

My first book was Fly Tying Made Clear and Simple by Skip Morris. It's a
great book and is used in many fly tying courses. I learned from that
without ever taking a class. (I still refer to it but not as much since
buying the 3rd one listed below).

Next book was Essential Trout Flies by Dave Hughes. It has the most used
patterns and variations of each. I use it often.

Next I bought Tying Dry Flies by Randall Kaufmann and the Fly-Tying Bible by
Peter Gathercole. The Tying Dry Flies helped with more advanced and more
difficult dry fly patterns I use it often. The Fly-Tying Bible has fly
patterns that are not very common to where I live and fish (Utah) so I don't
use it much.

I just bit the bullet and bought the killer $100 ($70 discounted) book that
is IMO the best book ever and that is The Fly Tier's Benchside Reference by
Ted Leeson & Jim Schollmeyer. This is NOT a book on patterns but has every
conceivable tying technic in the world in there.

I've never taken a class but feel that I am an OK fly-tier. The bugs catch
fish which is all that counts I guess.

I also started with Skip Morris' book then got the Randal Kaufmanns book. I
used these for quite a while before I took a couple of classes. All these
books are excellent books and I refer to them frequently. I also own the Fly
Tier's Bench Reference, which is excellent, but you don't need it to start
tying.
