Can I use a bloodknot with a level wind reel (Abu Garcia Ambass. 6000 and 7000)?
Hello,
Myself and my buddy hooked into some "big ones" this past weekend. We never got anything inshore because our lines kept snapping. Most likely blacktips or spinner sharks is what we where hooking up with. I have a 15' Ugly stick with a Abu Garcia Ambassedeur 7000 on it and it's filled with stren 20lb test. I had an 18" wire leader on but obviously that wasn't good enough. I want to buy some braided line (probably from bass pro) and then put a shock leader on the end of that. I'll probably get 50lb test braided line and also 50lb test mono. My question is how much shock leader and wire leader should I use and most importantly, will I have trouble casting if a bloodknot hits the levelwind? What other alternatives do I have (besides removing the levelwind)? Any tips would be both welcome and appreciated! Thanks in advance, T |

Thanks in advance, Ok here is my rig for your conditions 20 to 30# mono 250 to 350 yds 80 to 100# spectra shock leader 12 to 20 feet long 3 OZ weight, and 18 inch steel single strand 100# 5/0 to 9/0 hook The trick to this rig is the mono to spectra knot, it must fly from my reel, and through the eyes without dragging, and it must be SUPER strong. I do this with a double nail knot, here is it tied with "My" knot tool, but you can use other tools to tie them, mine is just EZ'er http://ezknot.com/line2line.htm The weight goes onto the shock leader as a slider, the steel leader stops it from reaching the hook I have never had a knot come loose or a shark cut or break me off with this rig -- Rodney Long, Inventor of the Boomerang Fishing Pro. , Straight Up Hooks , Straight Up Lures, Mojo's Rock Hopper & Rig Saver weights, and the EZKnot http://www.ezknot.com |

I already wound up my reel prior to reading this reply else I would have tried the nail not. I ended up leaving about 20 yards of the 20# Stren on the reel and used a double uni-knot to tie it to about 250yds of 50lb spider-wire. I then used an Albright knot to attach the spider-wire to some el-cheapo 50# mono-filiment. I ended up with a very small knot that went right through the level-wind. I haven't casted it yet but I think this will work. I want to use a wire leader also. Any suggestions as to how I can rig one up and how long it needs to be? Thanks, T |

There is a chance the 50# mono shock leader will get tailed, (cut by the sharks skin) You don't need this mono as a shock leader if using the spider wire. Spider Wire is "Spectra" it is much tougher than the mono I use only an 18 inch single strand steel leader, that I tie my 100# spectra to. I do this so I can make longer cast with the weight just 18 inches from the hook. -- Rodney Long, Inventor of the Boomerang Fishing Pro. , Straight Up Hooks , Straight Up Lures, Mojo's Rock Hopper & Rig Saver weights, and the EZKnot http://www.ezknot.com |

So I can just ditch the shock leader altogether and just add an 18" wire leader? What about the stretch of spider wire? does it have any give to it? |

No You had better have a rod that bends easy :-), and one rated for 50# line -- Rodney Long, Inventor of the Boomerang Fishing Pro. , Straight Up Hooks , Straight Up Lures, Mojo's Rock Hopper & Rig Saver weights, and the EZKnot http://www.ezknot.com |
