Default hyde county bass

braving ticks and chiggers and all sorts of other grabber-biter-eaters,
did a bit of bass fishing in hyde county last weekend... it has been
several years since i've chased bass. caught a goodly number, none huge.
lost a couple in the lily pads that had big shoulders. all in all,
loads of fun.

first photo is an outer canal in one of the impoundments at lake
mattamuskeet. they did some cleaning over the last two years, as it
used to be choked with alligator weed. tough to get in this one...round
trip requires 6 different portages out of one canal, across land, into
next canal. a kayak wouldn't be too bad, but a 120 lb gheenoe, motor,
cooler, gas can, fishin stuff...well, i doubt i'll ever do it solo
again. bass and scene in first post in thread above were of bass from
this impoundment and view of a portion of the impoundment. used to be a
great bass spot, not so much anymore...but still a pretty place. saw
deer, nutria, beaver, hawk, heron, wood ducks, snowy egret, teal...

other photos are sunrise on the lake...also a pleasant spot.

a private spot...may be the best bass fishery in eastern nc. haven't
been here in several years. caught lots of bass and jack...one grendel.
saw some wildlife, but no bear this trip. place is hunted heavily.

i caught the fish being held up by my gillie...with obvious disdain.
lost a couple of big ones in the lilies... the gillie caught a few too.

heard 'em, but didn't see them. lots of all kinds of life to be seen and
heard...except humans. thankfully, we rarely see those. part of what
makes the place one of my favorites.

I'd sure love to run a Horney Toad thru there a few times.

sunrise, jerry....sunrise! but, the sunsets on the western shore of the
lake are equally pleasing. sunsets just symbolize and portend an end i'm
trying to ignore at my age...

historically, jim and i are getting the boat in the water somewhere when
the sun is popping up, or still trying to trick a fish when it's
disappearing. but, we're getting old and figure we'd better savor some
of these exquisite moments before our dirt nap. so, we sleep a little
later and quit fishing a little earlier...or he does.g i've got
photos to take cause, given the rapidly diminishing brain cells, i've a
need for tangible memories. did i mention i'm getting old?

seriously though...lake mattamuskeet offers some of the best photo
opportunities for a professional photographer interested in sun, water,
and wildlife.

interesting...but, you did notice i mentioned that i had to portage the
gheenoe 6 times? those motors look heavy and loud...i expect they are
great for hunting, but fishing? might be the ticket in lake
mattamuskeet though...it's too shallow for the glitter boats and any
normal outboard in most places. one of the nice things about the place
is the lack of outboard motor noise and boat traffic.
