Today's mail brought two large plastic envelopes from NZ with NZ $21.50 in
postage. I had inquired about going to the ranch about a year ago, so they
must have put together this very thick portfolio on slick paper, with the sale
info on one side, and the fishing/hunting info on the other, along with
reprints from the NYT and Fly Fisherman magazine of articles about fishing at
the ranch. It sounds oh so beautiful, and the pictures leave me gasping
because of the beauty they show (and the big fish).

A week at the ranch is US $3250. Not bad, really, for the accomodations look
plush and the wine cellar has 10,000 bottles of fine wine. The kicker is
getting there. Air fare from Boston would run about $2200 and take 31 hours.
Just for ****s and giggles, I priced first class and business class. How about
close to.....gasp...$13,000, while business class was a *mere* $8,000+.

So, from Boston, a trip would run about $5500, which is cheaper than the best
lodge in Alaska. But, how the hell do you survive a 31 hour trip? I thought
flying from Japan to San Francisco in a C-121 Connie was long......

HI Dave
I flew to NZ this Spring from LA and it was only 13 hours in the
air. I think the time zone difference accounts for the 31 hours
as you loose or gain a day depending which way you go. I didn t mind
the flight at all, slept thru the nite which was most of the flight.
NZ Air was very comfortable and had great food.

I was at the "Ranch" did a helly ride from there out to
somewhere with a funny name and some big fish.....
Clarks a real nice guy and hooked me up with some good guides as
he was booked the week I was there.

From what I understand ( and that s somewhat limited) about NZ
fishing is that we go at the wrong time, at least int he Taupo
region. Tens of thousand of trout live int he lakes and come out
into the rivers and streams in the winter to spawn. In the summer
people wind up fishing over the few holdover fish that remain. Seems
like it s being done backwards.

IJ replies--fished with Clark while down that way [not at Poronui }. I
gave him a ROFF shirt and he gave me a Poronui Ranch cap--about all I could
afford at that place.. After studying the immigration requirements for
N.Z. I have decided to look a little closer to home. Am considering
purchase of a single wide trailer that drifted onto shore of small river
in Western N.C. after last storm---- price is right {there were no bodies
inside ] but must buy quickly as neither trailer or shore is likely to be
available after this week's storm.

He used to, now he's working for Umpqua in NZ/Aus,
and has a lot more fishing time :-)

... and you were a bit younger then.

We flew in a civilian version from Buenos Aires to Miami, then
in a DC-3 to Idlewild.
