I don't have to be, but I am. Not so much identity theft as simple
privacy. What we put on the 'Net gets spread around more than some might
think. A few years ago at a shop I'd never been to before the owner
recognized my name on the credit slip and asked if I "was on the Internet a
lot." Turns out he was a ROFF lurker. I felt thoroughly embarrassed to
be associated with this place g ... as the only thing known about me.

He and I have become friends since than and hopefully the bad taste that
start must have given him has been largely forgotten

Larry L ( who is now waiting for the deluge of nasty attacks telling me how
loving and high class ROFF really is ;-)

My only such experience was the opposite. I introduced myself to
another ffer on a stream as I was giving him a couple shad flies. He
recognized my name from ROFF as the guy who had posted the recipe &
pix (on abpf). It was actually kinda cool.

I've had a few other 'Net fly fisher' meetings, where I recognized the other
guy from posts or he asked if I was on a given board ( never ROFF ).
They were fine but I didn't find that being a 'Net guy' added anything to
the conversation.

Let me point out that in the situation I posted before it was ME that
decided to feel embarrassed, the other guy didn't say anything directly
negative about ROFF. This place offers some good things, and not just
fishing related ( I often post FFing questions/ comments with the lurkers in
mind .... not because I don't think I know the answer or that regulars give
a **** ) ..... actually ..... mainly other stuff is more why I'm here. (
including Winter boredom )

But when one or more of the well known locals finds his medication failing
him ( or is over 'medicated' ) frequenting the place is nothing to be proud
about.

I fish in part to get away from TV, radio, Internet and human social
posturing. That is the major reason I've never seriously considered a
'clave' ... the 'fishing with' sounds fine and I'm certain most of you are
better anglers than myself and I could learn a lot. But, listening to
talk about what an ass ( pick your favorite ;-) is on ROFF would mostly
ruin a day that is too precious to risk, a day out with Nature.

As I mentioned elsewhere recently I'd like to 'network' with some FFers and
use the Internet to share info on what's hot, what's not, where to park a
travel trailer for cheap etc and get together sometimes in person to BS.
But this media seems to bring out the worst in most people, from time to
time ( I first came to UseNet in '95 and have had my own domains since '96
including trying to create a 'community participation' site, before such
things existed, for retriever sports people ... I ended up shutting it down
because of the flaming asshole minority). After a flame session MY
desire to spend face to face time with the principals declines to zero.

at.

Hi Guys,

I've been lurking on ROFF for several years rather than being a regular
poster/contributor. I asked some questions on here about flyfishing
equipment to buy for my trip to Cuba a couple of years back. I'm in the UK
so it was OK for me to go to Cuba and spend money unlike, it would seem, a
number of you on here ;o).

Anyhow, I've joined the FB group as some of you may have already seen. WRT
security, what you put in about yourself and level of detail in your profile
is really up to you, but there are some settings which I've been looking at
which 'may' help those with concerns. I've not tried them out yet but here's
a bit of info that may help as to what people can see if they add people as
Friends:

Go to the Settings bit on the top of your FB page and select drop down to
Privacy settings

Here you can set individual things your Friends can see

For example, where it says Profile, you can click and drop down all the
areas in your FB Profile which Friends can see, select Customize in the
fields required to be changed. Agian, for example, you can select 'Only
Friends' or 'Customize' where you will then get another window where you can
then select 'Only Friends' plus 'Except these people'. You then type in
those Friends who you don't want to see this specific field information.

4. Once changed and saved, you can then select at the top of the page how a
Friend can see your page by typing in the friends name. So, you 'should' be
able to configure and check want some Friends can see over others.

I'm not a Guru on FB, indeed, I'm learning like the rest of you and there
may well be other security issues regarding hacking data etc. This is just
me checking out some of the settings and as I said, I've not tried them yet.

Regards,

--
Andy

Thanks, Andy. Welcome to ROFF (and the FB annex, too, I guess).

There's a bewildering array of different security thingies you can jiggle
on FB. I pretty much started with every security setting I could find
tamped down as tight as possible, then relaxed them one by one as (I
thought) I understood the implications.....

Anyway, if my identity gets stolen and all my bank accounts (such as they
are) get emptied, I plan to blame Frank and show up on his doorstep with a
sleeping bag....

If you want to see what this handsome chap looks like go to my site:

www.graigroad.demon.co.uk

Follow the Brenig 2001 link and look at the page for Saturday. There's
picture of Andy with a fine 4.5 lbs Rainbow.

This was on our (URFG) equivalent to your 'claves. It took place in
North Wales on the Brenig Reservoir. we were crap ff'rs but great
'clavers.

damn john...if you're lookin for a calamity, i'd suggest you seek out
pamlico jim. at least you'll die from some event in which you've been a
participant (though jim doesn't really allow many choices), rather than
from some accident you'd never anticipate happening. hell, i merely
attended a penns creek gathering...was warned frank was near... and,
before i ever saw him i suffered several bad falls in and around the
creek. i'd never attempt a sit on his doorstep... at least with jim,
the "invisibles" won't be a problem... charon has an open seat for all
of jim's acquaintances, paid in full.

Well there's a personage I haven't heard much of lately. It's not
like PJ & I were ever close friends, or even distant acquaintances
beyond his appreciation for my Wild Turkey Rare Breed a long while
back; but it's been a while since a good PJ tale.

he's semi-retired and collecting social security. however, he still
travels (though it's more of a shuffle now) those places where the
reaper's scythe can slice by at any time.

I'd almost forgotten about that one.... sheesh it was a hard and long day
for 2 fish and the worse part is, that's not the worst trip we've had! We've
been several times now and as a yearly event, had good weather, bad weather
and nil catches but we still seem willing to go back for more.

Hey! I'll have you know I can thrash the water into a foam as good as the
next guy! ;o)

but great 'clavers.

heh... agreed. Do you recall the fishing & camping experience a few years
back? Different venue, but same sort of results. We all brought standard
single or 2 berth tents while Dave had brought his large 8 or 10 berth
family tent and we were all socialising in there one evening. We had a
mosquito coil burning INSIDE and with the doors/flaps closed, drinking beer,
barbeque on the go outside, billions of biting midges, drinking beer and
funny smelling tobacco wafting around with the anti mosquito smoke (did I
mention drinking beer?) Well... we didn't manage to kill ourselves but I
reckon a few of the ol' brain cells may have gone! ;o)
