Datus Proper was a cool guy. He used to hunt ducks & pheasants on some
property
I once owned, and he was a surprisingly rowdy guy--for an expatriate
back-east blueblood.
We lost a good one with Datus.

I had heard that......bear in mind, he did part of his growing up out west.
Plus, not all of us easterners are that
sedate. Come East some year to the Penn's Creek Clave, and we can straighten
that misconception right out for you,Sandy!!
Back to Proper, I have repeatedly made this claim over the years: What the
Trout Said is simply the finest book ever written by an American on trout
fly design. By far.

Well, like Bob Jacklin, I too 'came of age' in New Jersey
(the phrase 'growing up' might be somewhat misleading).
That sounds like a good invitation Tom. When is that clave?

May 18th-until the last person leaves the Creek
(if the Green Drakes hold up, that could be like June 10th,or
thereaboutsg)
Tom
p.s. Seriously, email me. I will find a place to house you,
and we'll figure out how to get you to and from airports and the like. So
long as the airline doesn't lose your rods
like they did Willi's.........

your comments about "What the Trout Said" prompted me to drag it off the
shelf and re-read it. I hadn't read it in many years, had mainly
forgotten it, and really only remembered it's cutsey "talk to trout"
moments. But I must say I now agree that it is a real high point in
writing about thoughtful fly design. Thanks for the encouragement to
enjoy it again ... it's more than worth a read.

There are a lot of fly tiers out there, and there are (so far) no
insult fests
in this group. You'd think it would get more traffic.

Here (link below) is a forgotten fly that still works. This got me
thinking about forgotten flies.
I'm going to make a bunch this summer, and see if they still work:

The Bi-Visible, Renegade, Gray Hackle Yellow, Professor and Red-tagged
Woolly
Worm are flies that used to be in every shop in Montana--that you
never see
anymore.

I'd add Bloody Butchers (cool name,) Grey Hackle Peacock and the Potts
flies to your list as popular flies in CO during that period. I still fish
Renegades and Bi-Visibles.

Hey Willi,

I have copy of "Favorite Flies and Their Histories" by Mary Orvis Marbury
originally published in 1892 that has information on a great many of
yesteryear's flies. Unfortunately my copy was printed in 2001 &
unfortunately there are not any fly recipes in the book so it may take some
research to replicate the flies, however, there are some good color plates
which would help with the tier do so. It would be interesting to retro-fish.
An old cane rod, automatic reel, old style flies...think the fly line will
stay new and no gut or horse hair leaders though.

I don't go back to horse hair or anything....... but when I was learning
to fly fish for trout, I saw lots of the "old" ranchers using a
Shakespeare "Wonder Rod" with one of those Martin red automatic
reels, and fishing a cast of a couple of those flies. Some of them liked
snelled flies so that they could attach a series of flies up the leader.

Hi Willi:

Here's page that seems to jump right out of what you said, about old
timers
and Wonder Rods
