AP:

What are you tying, Muddler Minnows?

or is it for a wing case on a nymph?

AP:

Without knowing what materials you have in stock, I might suggest using
a white quill feather (duck or goose) and a brown marker to develop the
mottled look.

I have not found a good substitute, probably because I have never had a
problem finding mottled turkey. If the local shops are out try J
Stockard or one of the other mail order shops.

Mottled Turkey in most cases are sold in pairs and are used for wing and
or tails on wet flies and muddler minows. May I suggest just using Brown
or Cinamon tipped Turkey tail. It works great on nymphs far as wing
cases and it also provides a little extra sheen that I believe to be an
extra enhancer for fish catching on the fly. Hope this helps.

P.S. Turkey tail 99% available on line and at most fly shops.

AP,

You can use Grouse tail. It's softer so you'll want to double it up.
You can do what You can also do what was suggested about making your
own. Surprising that you can't find any. It's not a difficult material
to obtain.

If you want to try something synthetic, try Thin Skin. It comes in
many colors and mottling, can be cut to size and is very easy to work
with.
Runs about $2 per pack, which last a heck of a long time!
