Default Somerset Show 2008

I usually find some good deals on necks. Not usually A quality, but
good for nymphs and large drys. I use the FF Show as a time to stock up
on supplies, and I usually buy at least one totally useless fly tying
tool hoping it will revolutionize my fly tying.

AK, that's because there are less and less fly shops and more and more
guide services. Being a business owner most of my life, I find it
strange that so few of the guide services put on demos or seminars. One
would think teaching newbees how to fly fish would be good for business.

Here's a plug...The Tight Lines fly shop has a large booth at the show
and are very helpfull. Their shop has most of the items one would need
and they are always glad to answer tying questions. If you are ever in
Pine Brook, NJ, I would recommend checking them out.

RC, Find a fly tyer that doesn't have anyone watching him and tell him
you're just getting started and could he show you how to tie a basic
nymph pattern. I've had guys show me start to finish. Trust me, they
want to show off their skills.

See you there,
Cdog

I agree with Cdog. Tight Lines is a great shop. That's where I buy all
my material. I even took classes there in the fall. If you have any
questions they will answer them.

When I want to learn a new pattern I go there and buy the materials and
they show me how to tie it. If I don't understand it the first time they
will do it again. I would recommend them to anybody new or old to
fishing and tying.

I agree Cdog... most don't demo. I noticed this year again Mr.
Humphries is staying in retirement and (so far) not listed to provide a
casting demo. Too bad.. man with great dignity and class.

I do sit in on most of the seminars. I enjoy listening to the various
techniques that each guide employs, and their PATTERNS! I am a habitual
note taker, even with the lights out. Paying attention and someday
finding yourself in a simular situation... helps out.

TL, I had a spey rod and just fooled around with it till one day saw
Drew make a few casts and signed up for a series of instructions. Well
worth every cent those lessons were I'll tell you.

Joe has always been my mentor. I've learned and applied all his
techniques to my fly fishing style. He is the farthest from
conventional that I've ever seen, which is perfect for me cause I have
always strived to be different than the herd.

I was disappointed when he told me that his retirement was permanent.
He always loved teaching the kids. After his demo at the FF Show each
year, he would take my son and other boys aside and show them casting
techniques one on one. He was instrumental in my oldest son's love for
fly fishing. I wish he could be there for my 15 year old. Some day I
plan to follow his footsteps to Labrador for monster brookies.

I have heard that he still does some one on one in western PA.

LOL...I'm the other guy in the seminars taking notes in the dark.

As a professional tyer I can't recommend the danvise, only because they
wear faster due to the grafite...I do however recommend the anvil apex,
and the renzetti traveler..

Dammit! Then I guess us non-professional tyers should just throw our
Danvices in the trash and get something else. It's a shame cause it's
worked flawlessly for more than 5 years now.

May as well be strike three...

AK, I guess Al and Gretchen are non-professionals like myself. Always
willing to point out the obvious. OMG! That's your line isn't it.

I would love to see what the professional tyer ties on. I would go
dollar for dollar that my very first vise which was a thompson model A
will turn out some very very nice looking flies as well if not better.
Now yes I have graduated to my last vise that I will ever need, I bought
myself a Renzetti master. The reason for this vise is because I tie a
lot of classic wet flies and streamers, Catskill dry flies down to size
20 and now I am tying classic Salmon flies in 5/0 to 7/0. This vise was
right for me. It also took me awhile to save up for it as well. I love
it. There nothing wrong with the Danvise. It's a good product that gives
the biggest bang for the buck. Again like I said, look at your budget
that you can spend and get the best buy for your money. Just make sure
you try it before you buy it. Regal, HMH, Dan Vise, Renzetti, Dyna-King
and so on. Just make sure that the hook holding power is there and that
minimal adjustment are needed only from going from one hook size to
another, If you need to make adjustments after each hook of the same
size, then walk away from it. Also see how you hands feel. Do they feel
that you have room to work or are feeling a little cramped. lastly,
decide on pedestal/base or clamp. I love pedestals but you need to make
sure the base is heavy enough so the vise does not move on you. Lastly,
it's looks. I have to look at this item every day in my tying room. So
it has to be acceptable to my eye. Again I hope this input helps. Any
questions, please feel free to ask me. I will be tying at Somerset on
Sunday at 10:00 noon with the Catskill Fly Tyers Guild. If your there,
stop by and say hello.
