vise

Hi everyone I have flyfishing for the past 15 years 8 as a kid 3 slow
years and the last 4 I have tested my marriage to the fullest. Now I
am ready to buy my first vise I got all the info I needed on what kind
ect. I just don't know weather to get a peddistle base or C clamp. I
know it's probably a matter of what works for you, but I couldn't find
that much feedback on who l

I have both, but I've always found it much more comfortable using my pedestal
vise, as it doesn't have to be positioned at the edge of the tying bench, so I
can easily rest my elbows on the bench surface when tying - something that
would be awkward if even possible with a c-clamp model. The pedestal model
also has no restriction on bench thickness as a c-clamp model may.

I tie for both fresh and salt, and have never felt the pedestal vise was
unstable, even when lashing 2/0 budgies with kevlar thread. But if I ever
found it to be a problem, it would be no big deal to clamp the pedestal base
to the bench with an inexpensive c-clamp...

I prefer the clamp, for the same reasons mentioned by irish1 and Akskim,
but when travelling (espically camping) the pedestal can be very handy.

Years ago, I found a chunk of cold rolled steel, in the scrap, under
the cut-off saw of a machine shop. With a bit of drilling, tapping and,
a thumb screw, it became a pedestal base suitable for tables too thick
for the clamp on my old Thompson vice.

Like the other's I use both a clamp and pedestal for my Traveler vise.
I use the pedestal mostly when away from home, and clamp is much
better for streamers and sal****er flies. As was pointed out if you
really get into tying, you will spend alot of time at the vise, so be
fore buying anything, decide on where you are going to be tying, height
of table and chair, so you can get the better set up. Most better shops
will let you try a vise before buying. Ramsey Outdoor, Shannon's, and
Tightlines are your best bet.

Hey,
I think you are going to find out that much of tying is personal
preference and quirks. My tiny peice of advice is to get good tools and
a good vice. Tying is expensive and cheap. The start up expense is
fairly large, but the stuff lasts a lifetime. If you try to go too
cheap, you'll wind up with alot of stuff you don't use much if at all.
I have a Peak vice with pedestal. I believe a clamp is available for
it. I like the pedestal cause my "bench" is an old typwriter table and
the edge doesn't let you clamp very well. There you go a quirk. I tie
mostly very small flys and thus haven't had any problem with the thing
moving around. I like my rotary feature, but could get along without
it. You also should consider the look of the vice and how much respect
you will or will not get when you go to club ties or classes. Fly tying
is addictive and very relaxing. I especially like trying new materials
and variations on patterns. Have fun, Frogge.

thanks guy's I did decide to go with the more expensive stuff just
waiting for my birthday now so my wonderfull wife can think it was a
$100 vise she bought me(lol my if my poor wife ever found out how much
all my fly gear is worth she would be in shock). I installed a table
in my basment with the c-clamp in mind so thats what I'm going with. I
still am on the fence about which vise, but I think it's going to be the
renzetti presentation 2000 i'ts like $270.00. Now that DRO is closed I
don't have shop close by me and more than likely will not get to test
before purchase.

Before you invest a lot of money in an expensive vise, buy a good
inexpensive one. All too often I have seen folks invest in good
materials, tools, etc., only to drop out of tying. Give it a try with
the simplest tools you can get.

If the bug bites you, then you can invest in a better vise and better
tools. I still have my old tools and vise and I have given away many
other old tools and vises to newbies. I now tie with a Renzetti when
I travel (both a base and a clamp - I prefer the base), and a
permanently installed Nor Vise at home.

The neat thing about a base vise is that you can tie with it
*anywhere*, including the floor. I have been in cabins where there
was no place to clamp a vise, so the base model came in quite handy.

I have a Renzetti Traveler (noncam) and used it for years. Last year I
bought a DynaKing Barracuda and it has become my principle vice. It
has noth a pedastal and c-clamp.So much easier to use. I would suggest
Dyna King (Made in USA). I would suggest eBay as you may get a
bargin. Either buy from a store there or get in an auction. My
Traveler cost $86 and the Barracuda was $150 (both new).

There are lots of good vises for sale, and at least one piece of high priced
junk. I don't think you can go wrong with anything except that piece of junk
called Nor-Vise and their stupid bobbin. Avoid both like the plague!
