HOW TO FISH FOR BASS IN THE WINTER

Bass fishing in winter doesn’t have to be hard. Bait selection and
location are keys to success.
The two biggest keys for bass fishing in winter are finding the right
location and using the right lures. It all boils down to where the
baitfish will be and then what best imitates them.

Hair Metal

This term usually refers to a period in music, but it applies to
winter bass fishing. How, you may ask? Lures made of metal, and also
those made of some type of hair, shine when the water gets cold.


Blade baits, spoons and tailspinners are excellent choices for winter
bass fishing. They imitate small, dying baitfish, and that is what the
bass will be keying on this time of year. Hair jigs made of either
maribou or some type of synthetic material are also great choices. The
natural movement from the hair is subtle and not too aggressive.


Locations for Bass Fishing in Winter
Bass fishing in winter is all about the bait. Find baitfish and the
bass will be close by. This will vary based on where you live and what
types of forage the bass eat. If it is shad, using your electronics to
find them is a great start. Baitfish like perch, crappie and bluegill
act much like bass and will be near the bottom in the same places you
will find bass. Crawfish can go dormant when the water gets below
50-degrees, so finding areas where rock and mud come together are good
locations to find crawfish going to and from their wintering areas.


Navionics
Other key things to look for are long sloping points, bluff walls and
offshore islands and humps. These are ideal locations for winter bass.
Keep in mind that the best locations have deep and shallow water close
to each other. Warm days and sunshine will get bass in the feeding
mood, and they do not want to go far.
