It depends what your hoping to catch, but some general tips:
Don't be fooled into buying expensive tackle, you don't need it as a
beginner - just get the basic stuff for now, you can pick up bits each
week / month so that you have a few spare reels, rods etc etc.

Read the 'Angling Times or 'Improve your coarse fishing' magazine for
good advice on knots, bait, rigs and other ideas but *don't* take any
notice of the tackle reviews - I've *never* read a bad one about any
piece of tackle, when in reality most of it is crap - they get paid
large sums of money to rave about every rod, reel, pole, hook and
baitbox that gets made.

Join your local AC...ask in your tackle shop which have the most or
best waters...we pay 18 quid a year for two large lakes, a stretch of
canal and two stretches of river and you can go as many times as you
like for that. - the commercial waters are a fiver a chuck so it can
be expensive.

Don't bother with 'wonder baits' - they're a crock of crap - fish love
maggots, worms, bread, sweetcorn and other cheap stuff - what's more
they'll take these traditional baits when nothing else will get them
out of the water.

HTH

BTW - your system clock is about eight hours slow - you posted this at
about 11pm, but it's showing 5 to 3!

Yeh Improve is the best mag around, definately read that, you also get free
bits of gear with it too just make sure you have your licences then go
and try it out, thats what i did when i started, i didnt know what i was
doing but i slowly taught myself over the years which makes it more fun
if you dont catch dont give up as i didnt catch till about my 20th trip!

#20? It can't be all that good then.

The single simplest and most important rule that beginners (and many others)
ignore is:

Don't frighten the fish.

Keep out of site, quiet, don't thump on the bank, keep water disturbance
minimal and you vastly improve the odds.

Cheerio,
