Pole Advice

I know that balanced tackle is imperative, and think this is why I lost many
fish on my last outing. I am quite new to pole fishing (at anywhere other
than Makins Phase 3!) and could really use a guide for elastic, line and
hook combinations.
I have a Maver 'Strong Arm' with 2 top 3's and 2 top 2's, I have recently
set them up with 4, 8, 12 and 16 elastics (to cover most bases!).

That bit sounds fine. What fish are you targeting? A .17mm line on a 22 hook
with a 16 elastic is too much, however something like a 14 hook would be
fine for bigger fish. By the same token, a .10mm line to a 14 hook on a
No.4 line is no good for big fish. The hook size and the elastic needs to
match your chosen quarry. The line thickness needs to be able to handle
them. Just give me some idea of what your after catching, and maybe I can
help. For elastication go through all of the top 3's same with the top 2's
but on one top 2 do three sections with a No. 12 elastic and you should be
able to handle most things. I use this dual core stuff, it covers from 8 to
12 through three sections of my match kit. If you ar only after big carp.
Discard the first section of a top 3 and elasticate with 16. Confused yet??

Technique is just about as important. Never point your pole at the fish, and
ship back smoothly. Practice makes perfect.

I tried to cover pretty much everything with the elastication I have done.

The 16 is through top 3 (although most of the top section was cut back) for
large Carp (8lb +)...
The 12 is for Carp at 5 +, through top 3 with last 12" 'doubled up'.
The 8 (most used) is for carp at 2-4lb and river bream, through top 2, I
usual use 2.8lb line straight through to a Drennan Super Specialist 16 for
small baits or 14 for hair rigs.
The 4 is for the canal and general silver fish use (yet to be tried -but
will probably get a lot of use this winter!).

I lost fish using the 8 kit, so stepped up to the 12 and lost more, I tied
up a margin rig using 3.5lb line (strongest I had on me at the time)...

i used to have a maver grim reaper (until some prick robbed it out of me
car) which is a very similar pole, i had two top kits, one with size 12
laccy and the other had 18s.
the 12 was used primarily for 'mystery' waters (i didnt have a clue what i
was going to get!) and is quite strechy even with just a 1lb tench on the
end.
the 18 lastic was used for comercial carp pools where i was hauling out
double figure carp with ease, up to about 13lbs.
i used 'karp kruncher' 7.5lb line in both instances as its as thin as 4lb
line and would fool even the tiny silver fish and would easily hold the big
stuff with no trouble, the best thing about it was that all my (homemade)
rigs were of the same line and worked on all waters effectively.
another advantage of this, is that your not carrying around an array of rigs
for every different river/lake/species etc.
I dont use ready made rigs as they fall nicely into the category of
'expensive and crap', i can make a good solid rig in less than two minutes
on the bank to whatever depth is required.

on the size 12 lastic i would use an 18-14 hook for fish that i was
expecting to be 1-5 lbs, and on the heavy elastic i would use a 12-8 for the
big paste/meat/dogfood baits for the 6-13lb carp.

forgot to add that the 7.5lb KK line is .19mm!
