Montauk Sportfishing Report 7/11/04

The MBCA shark tournament was held this past weekend, and the fishing was
pretty good. There are still enough blue sharks around to provide some
action, with most boats catching a couple, plus the exotics are always
available as well, with most of them being threshers. The water is warming
up nicely, so I would expect the blue shark population to start to shrink as
they move east where there is cooler water more to their liking. The
temperatures where most of the boats were fishing was in the high sixties to
low seventies. The results are as follows;

The local bluefins are getting more cooperative, with boats that get on them
catching up to a half dozen, mostly between thirty and fifty pounds. The
center of the action the last I heard was around 600/700, but that will
undoubtedly change some from day to day. The current regs allow for two fish
per boat. You can check up on the regs by dialing 1 888 USA TUNA (872 8862).

Inshore, the fluke fishing is great, with lots of fish for action, and
enough keepers to insure limits for anyone who puts in a little effort. Most
of the action is still centered around the Midway Buoy, but there are still
a couple of doggies to harass you in the deeper water.

Striped bass fishing has been slow as far as numbers are concerned, but
there are some real nice fish around. Thirty to forty pound fish can be
found if you are patient enough. Many of the charter boats are doing a
little fluke fishing when the tide is off for the bass. It's either that or
the party's arms start falling off from too much jigging and too little
reeling in.
