Default Does anyone know what a Lampuki is?

Hi all
I have a question on a fish called Lampuki that is caught in Malta.

I have seen several referenes that it is a dolphin fish in english also
called a Dorado:
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en...i+dorado&meta=
http://www.landbigfish.com/fish/fish.cfm?ID=52

But when I see the pictures of a dorado, it doesn't look like a lampuki to
me:
http://images.google.co.uk/images?sv...%3Aen&q=dorado

A lampuki that I'm used to seeing can be seen he
http://images.google.co.uk/images?sv...3Aen&q=lampuki

So im a bit confused. Can anyone help explain please?

Mike

Looks like you may have a tough time with this one.
I've caught Dolphin (Mahi Mahi/Dorado) and looking at the pictures I 'd have
to agree with you that while
this "Lampuki" is obviously a very close relative of the Mahi Mahi, it isn't
exactly the same.
The Lampuki seems to have larger eyes. And the heads are different in both
makes and females from Mahi Mahi.
Yet they share the same body and fin structure, tail, skin appearance and
presumably color.
And although I first assumed that perhaps this was some mediterranean
sub-species which would
account for the minor phyical difference all the sources say that both the
Lampuki and the Mahi Mahi
are Coryphaena hippurus. So I think you'll need a real specialist on this
one.

Thanks so much for the input!
We have always known them as lampuki, but this is a Maltese word, it was
only after I began researching it that the other names came about.

Someone in Malta must know. They catch enough of them!
Unfortunately my family only know them as lampuki. Maybe one day this
mysetery will be solved!
