Screw the other stuff - I'm adicted to curling this year. OK, I'll come out too. I've been watching curling whenever I get a chance. Curling was a big part of Carol's life growing up, as it's a big social event in a small Canuckistani town. (Actually, I think it's just an excuse to get together and drink. Not that there's anything wrong with that.) So I figure it's my duty as a good husband to acquaint myself with the sport. (And heaven knows this is the only time we're ever gonna see the stuff on tv.) At first I was watching out of curiosity, but now I've learned about the strategy, and I've become a fan of the game. I'm even starting to talk like they do. Chuck Vance ("yup! ... whoa! ... yup! ... harder!! ... harder!!!)" |

My young one didn't like watching it at first- "they're yelling at each other!" I can see why they don't have mixed gender teams as well. Some of those lady curlers are...distracting. Bill |

Screw the other stuff - I'm adicted to curling this year. Does anybody else live in an area where shuffleboard is played in bars? Not the one played on cruise ships, but on a raised wooden table with hand pushed pucks? It's pretty must the same game in miniature. -- Stan Gula http://gula.org/roffswaps McIntosh responds - spent one summer in Ocean City N.J.----shuffleboard in bars was fun----but throwing darts cost me a lot more beers Have not watched Winter games much--just don"t associate with cold weather---but am sure enjoying watching Duke and North Carolina basketball on tube,. It's pretty must the same game in miniature. Stan: Curling is basically played in bars. Every curling rink in every town in western Canada has a lounge that overlooks the ice, so you can sit and drink after the game, during the game, or before the game. Curling and shuffleboard.....yep pretty much the same game, except one is played with 40 pound rocks, two people sweeping, 80 feet of ice, and no rebounds off the sides.....yep, except for that, pretty much the same. I used curl, but gave up a number of years ago. I figured it was more efficient just to go straight to the bar. Besides, it used to creep me out seeing people kneeling on ice with their butts in the air yelling "Hurry, Hurry Hard!!!" I still go to the curling rink every once in while, mostly for the french fries. Tim Lysyk |

BTW, Carol says that those two commentators have been announcing curling as a pair in Canada as far back as she can recall. IMHO, they really add some great flavor to the broadcast. Chuck Vance |

Reminds me of darts, where the whole team has something to say about what point you should cover next during a cricket game. Darts is another "sport" that you can participate in with a beer in one hand and a cigarette in your mouth. I vaguely remember my league team in Cleveland went to some match in a Downtown hotel. They had about 20 boards set up in a large conference room, with kegs in the middle of the room. Far too many pitchers later, we found ourselves in the final throwing for first. Came in second--to many pitchers. Tough to pace yourselves just right when you don't know how long it will take to get eliminated. -- Scott Reverse name to reply |

In fact, I get the impression that drinking is pretty much the whole point of the game. All that sliding across the ice, sweeping, etc. is really just to keep you warm between drinks. :-) Wolfgang they need to tweak the halftime shows, though. ![]() Hmmm ... I got the impression that the only reason they have an intermission is so you can refill your flask/glass/whatever. Chuck Vance (did I mention that they do some drinking?) |
