Well one, I grew up in the south. Winter sports is something I saw for an
hour on Wide World of Sports. I tried skiing and ice skating once. Emphasis
on once.

Two-I think a Winter "Olympics" is kind of stupid. It ain't like the greeks
did bobsledding in the nude or anything?

Three-I blame living in Atlanta in 1996 for an extreme distaste for all
things 'Olympics'. They've not been for amateurs in a generation and like
college football and baseball, there's a ****load of money enriching very
few while others willingly allow themselves to be financially soaked.

Lastly, I hold the example of the first gold medal winning african american.
There was a relay race before that he pulled out of before the solo race,
probably costing the US team a gold. Team my ass, this guys gonna get some
quick cash and his likeness on Wheaties before he fades out of our
collective thoughts. His ass should have been given a one way coach ticket
back to the states.


It's not like there aren't a ****load of other stations to
choose from or other things to do.


Other than the news and the rare documentary, the only thing TV does for me
is keep my wife occupied so I can play in the shop or read in peace.


Personally, I've been enjoying the games.

You did a good job of describing why you don't like the Olympics and I
understand why people don't like the Olympics, or sports, or fly fishing
or graphite or single malt whiskey....... but you didn't explain why you
are "wishing the Winter Olympics would go away".

It is probably nothing more than my tendency to literally interpret
things or read things into a statement that aren't there but I found
your statement odd. I don't understand how it "bothers" or effects you.
Do you think it is "bad" for society or hurts people or ???????

As long as I've been watching the Olympics (and for as long as they've
been going on from what I've read) there's been selfishness as well as
selflessness, heroes as well as villain, sacrifice as well as profit etc
etc etc. "Good old days?" I'm always skeptical of that. Things do
change but the essence of the physical challenge stays the same.

Shani Davis earned the right to skate the 1K and neither he
nor his donkey should have had that taken away from them no
matter what misguided, ignorant opinions others have about
individual "team come lately" sports.


I see why you don't know the meaning of ignorant, he earned the privledge of
skating for the US team, the only right he has are those mentioned in the
constitution and subsequent federal court rulings.

I think the Olympic *ideal* never really existed but whatever pretense of
it went away a long time ago starting in Berlin, compounding it in recent
history plus being white trashed in Atlanta. Leaving us with a spectacle an
every other year spectacle that forces the community hosting to hose their
taxpayers for infrastructure improvements, soaks the gulible, and fattens
the pockets of the committee members while some nationalist or political
statement is supposedly made. They have world championships and other meets
in these sports, that should suffice for the "Olympics". To a certain extent
I can understand the summer variety, but winter?

As much as I wish they would go away, they aren't. I also said I wish
American Idol would go away. I'm not going to get that wish either.

And yes I think they are bad for the poor saps that end up paying for them.

Like I said, if you or anyone else enjoys them, good for you.

Excellent for keeping spouses occupied, I agree. But if the sound is
turned low and the computer isn't facing the TV, it makes for a nice
light machine with a bit of sound. I particularly like the Spanish
speaking channel, as I don't feel obliged to pay any attention to the
words. And the golf channel can be soothing, even in the middle of
the night with half hour ads on.

live in an area where shuffleboard is played in bars? Not the one played on
cruise ships, but on a raised wooden table with hand pushed pucks? It's
pretty must the same game in miniature.

Used to be pretty common in this area back in the 50s and into the 60s.
Last time I saw one was probably ten or fifteen years ago. Last time I
played, a lot of people got upset when I jumped up on the table with a
broom.

Me too, and Robyn is thoroughly addicted. The most fun is wondering what the
other teams are yelling. Most of it sounds like Sgt. Shultz on a bad-hair
day.
