Down with this sort of thing!!!!

From the rust on the hook It has been there some time, or the angler in
question is even more irresponsible using rusty hooks.

---------------------------------------------
The hook was probably not rusty when he used it. In actual fact he was
more responsible in using a hook that did rust, rather than a stainless
steel one that would remain in the fishes gullet, or throat for the rest of
its life.

I tend to agree. Stainless hooks remain dangerous if lost in a snag too.
Far better for those who come after if the hook rusts away.

Cheerio,

Ok agreed.
However what remains was that his methods were irresponsible
And the fact that it was a large single hook on a length of mono might also
suggest that s/he may have been long lining.

Or fishing for something else entirely and was bitten-off by a pike
unexpectedly grabbing (say) a worm?

For those about to take up pike fishing, or for those unsure
There is a minimum amount of equipment you need when going pike fishing

and
its not the rod and your bait.
You will at the very least need
A good stronge LARGE landing net (fairly obvious what this is for)
An large forceps (for unhooking)
And Wire Traces (so that the fish doesnt bite through and break the line)

Add to that list a suitable unhooking mat.
a set of good quality long nose pliers
and a set of mini bolt cutters.
Line 15lb+ has already been mentioned

Dave
