The Future of Fly Fishing in America ?
"rw" wrote in message ink.net... JR wrote: You understand that there are significant (and growing) numbers of people in the U.S.--even working people--who have no job-related health insurance or other benefits, and who have nothing left to buy insurance with or to save after paying for essentials (food, housing, utilities and clothing)? The poor and the close-to-poor will always be with us. When they stop voting against their economic interests, stop voting from fear of gay marriage, stop voting against the teaching of evolution in schools and the separation of church and state, stop voting against freedom of choice wrt abortion, stop voting against against enlightened drug policies, stop voting for privatization of Social Security, stop voting for ruinous foreign adventures, for handouts to wealthy private and corporate interests (including the so-called health-care and pharmaceutical industries), etc., etc., their plight will only grow worse. I am that so-called "close to poor", and I didn't vote against my economic interest, I believe that gays should have the exact same rights as any other American, I believe science should be taught in public schools and religion at home and in the churches, I believe in a woman's right to choose without question, I think the war on drugs is a joke, I accept the existing safety net for retirement (if the *******s would repay all they have stolen from the system), I don't support offensive wars--unless we are attacked, I do not believe that coporations and industry are what the Framers referred to when they wrote "...or the right of the PEOPLE* to peacably assemble, and to pettition the Goverenment for a redress of grievances" (First Amendment...* Emphasis mine). DON'T BLAME THIS **** ON US POOR FOLKS! Running up high-interest credit card debt is NOT the answer to their problems. The credit card companies have only themselves to blame--if bankruptcy is good enough for Enron and hundreds of other multi-billion dollar corporations, it's good enough for me! Ken Fortenberry wrote: rw wrote: Dave LaCourse wrote: We buy everything from food to vacations on credit cards,... Me, too. Then I get the airfare miles, ... This has to be the most pathetic ****ing contest I have ever seen on roff. And I've seen a few. Two pompous pricks pontificating about their money and then trying to "out humble" each other. Why don't you two get a room, or at least take it to email. I have to go with Ken on this one. Please, shoot me. My best guess is that you're mired in credit-card debt, sucker. Steve, I was mired in "short-term" credit debt for years. Ran it up in my twenties and early thirties while trying to see my son and daughter through some significant health issues. My choice was to accept some sort of welfare or do something else and I made my choice. Your loathing of people with credit debt (this isn't the first time you've raised the point) because you think all of them ran out and bought "toys" shows how distanced you are from some other people's painful reality. It has only been in the not-to-distant past that I've finally dug out from that hell-hole, and I personally feel great empathy for anyone in that situation. Before you place yourself up on some pedestal and allow yourself to criticize others, you should walk a mile in their shoes. -- TL, Tim --------------------------- http://css.sbcma.com/timj/ |

You, of all people on roff, should be among the first to be appalled and disgusted that anyone in their right mind could, in the 21st century, declare in public that "Malthus was correct." Ken Fortenberry Whether or not he was a racist, in an otherwise unchecked populace, famine, disease, & war will reduce populations to the limits that the ecological area can support. I don't have to like the man or his other beliefs to acknowledge that populations do not increase unchecked. Wait a few years until Bird flu makes the genetic leap into the common human strains and we'll continue this discussion. If we both can. Do you actually need more to worry about, or do you just like it when the reasons are more plentiful? -- TL, Tim --------------------------- http://css.sbcma.com/timj/ |

How felicitous the quotation of Jesus--non sequitur though it is--to bolster the tired old argument that the plight of the poor is their own fault! You really believe that all poor people who vote do in fact vote for all the things listed above, and that all those issues directly affect their economic well-being? Running up high-interest credit card debt is NOT the answer to their problems. I don't think it is, and I don't believe the poor think it is. Only that it is sometimes the only real choice--albeit a very bad one--many of them (and other folks as well) have in times of crisis. None of which is an excuse for the deceptive, unethical business practices of the industry. JR |
