The flatworms that send the virus emails (and spammers, as well) use robot
type software that scans all posts to newsgroups for return email addresses. To dodge this, don't use your actual email address in your news client Properties. This email address string is in the header area of all your postings. You can alter your email address string by putting something like DELETE-THIS within your email address. If someone wants to email you something and they manually see that bogus character string in your address, they know to remove it. The automated gadgets don't. Hope this helps Bill Allemann |

If you think this will protect your from viruses, you are sadly mistaken.
Please read up on how WORMS work. In this day and age, they simply take email addresses from infected computers (address books, caches, etc) and use _that_ persons computer to sent out more infected emails. The days of spammers sending out their own email viruses are over (too easy to trace and shut down... with big fines). What you mention only works against a few spammers. Your email might be dangerous in that it might convince people they only need to smudge their address for protection. This will only make the problem _worse_. People need to install and update anti-virus software. "bill a" wrote in message ... I didn't mention anything about virus protection, just avoiding some
automated bulk mailings. Jeez Todd, lay off the coffee. "Todd Copeland" wrote in message ink.net... If you think this will protect your from viruses, you are sadly mistaken. Mmmm.... coffee...
But, I since I've altered my e-mail address in the newsgroups, I haven't been pestered too badly by people that want to increase the size of my manhood, or want to have great sex with me. But yes... a good anti-virus software is highly recommended too. "bill a" wrote in message . .. I didn't mention anything about virus protection, just avoiding some automated bulk mailings. Hi Josh,
I'll assume you're using Internet Explorer as your browser software. When you are viewing a newsgroup, the active window is produced by Outlook Express (or possibly Outlook). From there, you click Tools - Accounts and highlite the name of your news account, which is generally similar to the name of your ISP. Then click Properties and you should see a box named "Email Address" This character string is what the spam robot software harvests, and you can make it anything you want. You probably need to close and reopen Internet Explorer, etc before the change takes effect. If you use Netscape or a different email client, the menu sequence may be different. Get in touch if you have any problem. Bill "Josh" wrote in message ... Bill, Not sure how to change address as you suggest. What menu heading do I look under to do it? This stuff puzzles me.
